Dr. Kaminer received his M.D. from Sackler School of Medicine, Tel-Aviv Univ. Israel.
1984: Completed a combined General and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry residency at TAU.
1976-1982: Served as chief medical officer (Lieutenant Commander) of the Israeli Navy in Sinai-Red Sea arena. He practiced hyperbaric medicine with civilian and military divers.
1985-1987: He enrolled in a Child & Adolescent Psychiatry clinical research fellowship at Bradley Hospital, Brown University, Providence, RI. Dr. Kaminer was also a visiting fellow at the substance abuse Treatment program at Harvard affiliated, McLean Hospital, Belmont, MA.
1988-1990: Founded and directed the youth substance abuse treatment program at Western Psychiatric Institute & Clinic, Pittsburgh, PA, as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry.
1991-1993: Dr. Kaminer was a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the adolescent substance abuse treatment program at Bradley Hospital, and faculty on the Alcohol and Addictions Studies Center, Brown University, Providence, RI.
1994: Dr. Kaminer was appointed as an Associate Professor at the Department of Psychiatry & the Alcohol Research Center, University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington, CT.
2000: Dr. Kaminer received his MBA (Healthcare focused) from the University of Hartford, CT.
2003: Dr. Kaminer was promoted to a Professor of Psychiatry.
2009: Dr. Kaminer received a joint appointment at the Department of Pediatrics. He has been involved in research at the Injury Prevention Center of the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (CCMC), Hartford.

Dr. Kaminer main interest has been focusing on clinical research of the assessment, treatment and continuity of care of high-risk behaviors particularly substance use disorders (SUD) in youth. He has special interest in comorbid depressive disorders and suicidal behavior. He has been mentoring psychiatric residents at UConn and Yale on adolescent SUD.
Dr. Kaminer has received funding for research from NIAAA, NIDA, CSAT and the Donaghue Foundation in CT. He has been on the editorial board of several peer review journals and served as a guest editor of special issues on adolescent substance abuse including: American Journal of Addictions (2006), Substance Abuse Journal (2008; 2014), and the Child & Adolescent Psyc Clinics of North America (2010).

Scientific Leadership Highlights: Dr. Kaminer is: 1) the coordinator of the Youth Treatment Section of the board of the Research Society on Marijuana (RSMj.org); 2) a member of the executive committee of the World Association of Dual Disorders (WADD) and 3) on the scientific advisory board of Smart Approach to marijuana (SAM), a National organization opposing legalization of cannabis for recreational purposes due to its harmfulness for youth safety, neurobehavioral development and socio-academic wellbeing.
Dr. Kaminer authored/edited 6 books, authored/co-authored more than 170 scientific publications and made numerous scientific and invited presentations nationally and internationally. He also developed several rating scales and manuals including: the Teen Addiction Severity Index (T-ASI) that has been translated into dozen languages including Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Hindu, French, Hebrew and Dutch;
The Teen Treatment Services Review (T-TSR); and the Adolescent Substance Abuse and Goal Commitment questionnaire (ASAGC-Q) that has been translated into Spanish and Portuguese. Dr. Kaminer‘s team has developed treatment and continued care manuals including the MET and CBT manuals for the Multisite Cannabis Youth Treatment (CYT) study (N=600).
Dr. Kaminer books include: a) Brief Telephone Continuing Care Therapy for Adolescents; Hazalden, MN, (2010); b) Clinical Manual of Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment, American Psychiatric Publishing (2011); c) Youth Substance Abuse and Co-occurring Disorders, American Psychiatric Publishing (2016) and d) Clinical Manual of Youth Addictive Disorders, American Psychiatric Publishing (In preparation for 2019).
